Not only is it natural and organic, with no toxins, but it will it do a fantastic job cleaning your house. In addition, it is also sustainable and great for the environment too.

Non-Toxic Lemon Vinegar Cleaner

When I started on my non-toxic journey, finding a household cleaner was at the top of my list. All the ones I had been using, even the “green” ones were full of toxins that I didn’t want my family breathing in or touching. Some companies only list one or two ingredients on their products and some don’t even list any at all, nor are they required to. Makes you wonder what they’re hiding, huh? So, when I couldn’t find one that I trusted, I decided to make my own and have been ever since.

Let’s talk ingredients…

Unlike with most other cleaners, you only need three things to make this one…white distilled vinegar, lemons (or lemon essential oil) and water. That’s it! When you are looking to switch to non-toxic, the less ingredients the better and be sure they are organic (see my post on the benefits of buying organic foods and products here)

Lemon peels soaked in vinegar for 2 weeks

So let’s start with the vinegar. In case you were dying to know, vinegar is made from ethanol (alcohol). It is then fermented to make acetic acid, which gives it its acidity. In fact, “acetic acid destroys the cell structures of bacteria and viruses” (Cleanipedia) which makes it a great ingredient for a non-toxic cleaner.

What are the benefits of using vinegar to clean?

  • it dissolves mineral deposits on faucets, showers and toilets
  • it gets rid of the dirt, grease and grime of everyday living
  • it kills bacteria
  • it gets rid of mold and mildew
  • it has no coloring agents (if you use white distilled vinegar)
  • it’s very inexpensive

Switching gears, I think it’s safe to say that we’re all familiar with the lemon. You know that feeling of sour and acidity when you bite into one. Well did you know that they are actually fabulous cleaners too? Even the lemon essential oil will do the same job as if you use peels from the actual lemon.

What are the benefits of using lemons to clean?

  • they are a great deodorizer (especially for drains)
  • they are able to get rid of mold and mildew
  • they can kill bacteria
  • they are inexpensive

Add these two together and you have the perfect non-toxic cleaner

The wonderful thing about this is you know (and can pronounce) each of the ingredients that make it up. It’s extremely safe for your family and pets. It cleans your whole house wonderfully. The ingredients are easy to get which makes this the perfect DIY homemade lemon vinegar non-toxic cleaner. Use this on all counters, cabinets, sinks, toilets, tubs/showers, mirrors, glass, tile and even yoga mats.

PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT USE THIS ON WOOD FLOORS OR WOOD FURNITURE

DIY HOMEMADE LEMON VINEGAR NON-TOXIC CLEANER

Give this three ingredient DIY homemade lemon vinegar non-toxic cleaner a try. Not only is it natural and organic, with no toxins, but it will it do a fantastic job cleaning your house. In addition, it is also sustainable and great for the environment too.

  • 1 – 32 ounce spray bottle or 2-16 ounce spray bottles
  • 1 – 32 ounce widemouth mason jar with lid (if using lemon peels)
  • 5 Lemon Peels The entire peel of 5 lemons (Organic is best)
  • 30 Drops Lemon Essential Oil (if not using lemon peels) (Organic is best)
  • 2.66 Cups White Distilled Vinegar (Organic is best)

IF USING LEMON PEELS:

  1. Take the peels of approximately 5 lemons

  2. Put the peels into a quart size widemouth mason jar

  3. Fill up the jar and lemon peels with white distilled vinegar so that peels are covered

  4. Put the lid on and let sit on the counter for about 2 weeks

  5. After 2 weeks, drain and reserve the vinegar, throwing out the lemon peels (or put them in the disposal for deodorizing)

  6. Put the lemon vinegar in a 32 ounce spray bottle

  7. Fill the rest of the way up with filtered water

  8. Shake and it's ready to use

IF USING LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL:

  1. Put 2.66 cups of white distilled vinegar into a 32 ounce spray bottle

  2. Add 30 drops of Lemon Essential Oil

  3. Fill the rest of the bottle with distilled water

  4. Shake and it's ready to use

The mixture will be a darker yellow if using the actual lemon peels. 

If using the lemon essential oil, the mixture will be clear.
